Christmas Spider Legend (folktale from Germany and Ukraine): a poor widow and her children cared for a lonesome pine tree. They couldn't afford to decorate for Christmas. Spiders spun their webs all over the tree over night, and when the sun's first rays hit their webs, they transformed into shimmering strands of silver and gold, thus bringing good fortune to the little family.
This, they say, is the origin of the tradition of hanging tinsel and a small spider ornament on your tree.
